How is it that people make money after they build a website?

how do people make money if they build a website and and people visit it. I just don't get who sends them the money.

Some one told me it get paid by advertisers but......................
What if a teenager builds a website can he or she collect the money and how do the website creator get advertisers who want to advertise on his website?????????
